Chart of the week: the 1963 Santa Susana Stakes

Finding the muddy and deep Santa Anita strip to be no challenge, the Bold Ruler filly Lamb Chop came home running to defeat the Nashua filly Nalee by a half-length in the Santa Susana Stakes (8.5f) on Valentine’s Day 1963.

Nalee, who had recorded a five-length win over Lamb Chop in the Santa Ynez Stakes (6.5f) on January 24, reportedly did not take to the off going.

From the first crop of Bold Ruler, as a sophomore Lamb Chop would race to a record of (16) 10-4-2 and set track records at Keeneland and Garden State Park on her way to being named the Champion 3-Year-Old Filly of 1963.
