Chateaugay pronounced “Chattigay”

“LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) – Chateaugay, winner of Saturday’s Kentucky Derby, is named for a small town about five miles from the Canadian border in upper New York State.

John W. Galbreath, owner of the colt, has business interests in the town. Trainer Jimmy Conway said lumberjacks in the area call it “Chattigay.” (The Atlanta Constitution, 05/05/1963)
