On Ben Brush

“Of all the horses which showed at Gravesend yesterday perhaps the worst looking was Ben Brush. His head is not the finely tapering one of the thoroughbred, his legs seem to be out of proportion, and he has the appearance all through of being an ugly duckling. Yet under this ungainly exterior there beats one of the stoutest hearts that ever throbbed within a thoroughbred, and in spite of his poor looks Ben Brush is a favorite with followers of the turf.” (The New York Times, 09/26/1897)
